You never forget your first love. No matter how hard you try.

The day of his high school graduation after getting caught making out with a boy in his parent’s kitchen, Benny Quintaña left his best friend (and unrequited crush) Mikey behind when he stormed off in a righteous teenage rage and joined the Marines.

One dishonorable discharge and a few alcohol-soaked years later, things are looking up. He’s almost a year sober. He has a new job in a new town where no one knows his history of failure. He’s totally got this.

When the smoking hot masked man he hooks up with in the bathroom of a club turns out to be his ex-best friend Mikey, Benny's world explodes. When he meets Mikey's four-year-old daughter and realizes he loves her as much as he still loves Mikey, Benny realizes he’s screwed in more ways than one.

I did not finish this book. I couldn't.

I bailed a little over 60% in because it is not well written, and the editing and ebook formatting suck.

If I were to guess, I would guess that at the time this was published the writer needed about ten more years of practice to manage such a story. There's failure to communicate between characters, and then there's just egregious writing. I kept hoping....but no. I give SERIOUS side-eye to those reviewers rating this over three stars. You set the bar too low. Don't do that, it does not help anyone.

OMG, what an adorable love story between Benny, Mike and little Jasmine. No, I don't mean adorable in the cutesy, cutesy sense.....I mean in how much love the men already had for each other and how Jasmine helped to pave the way. This was another beautifully written story, in this witty cast of characters who are always there to lend a hand. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK AND THIS AMAZING SERIES!!!!
I really enjoyed this book the characters where interesting and the little girl in the book was adorable also the topic of ptsd was handle rally well to see what these soldiers go through when they return home and how much work it takes just to acclimated back into society was a nice touch
This book starts a bit slowly, but do yourself a favor, and keep reading. This book is AWESOME! The only way it could be improved is to be longer. I want to read more of Michael and Benny's lives. I hope there is another book in this series so that we learn more about their future.
I love a story when people are reconnected unexpectedly and their expectations are turned upside down. Benny is working hard to get his life back on track. Mickey has his own grief that he is working through. At first I worried that maybe this wouldn't be good for Benny but once they start to communicate you can see the potential of them. They are able to be there for each other and I love all the wonderful people who become a part of their lives. It is rewarding when people turn out to be better than others expected. A beautiful story full of love, healing, and community.
I Love every one of the characters that A. E. Wasp has written in this series! A story is nothing without great characters and these stories are fantastic. The main two characters in this story are the same in the next book #5 Paper Roses. I happened to read them backwards. Benny & Mikey where best friends in High School. Lost track of each other for 8 years. Then find each other in a surprising way. I can't say how much I love these two characters and I would really love to read much more about them. But I know there are more characters in this series we need to hear more about yet. I can't wait!!!!!
I so wanted to give this a 5 star rating but there were just too many editing errors.

The story is fantastic.
The dialogue was very natural and believable.
The characters were ones that barged into your heart and held on tight. Even when you wanted to shake them silly.
I'm sure there are a lot of fine physicians in the military who take their jobs seriously and bend over backwards to give the best care to the wounded and provide follow up after they're discharged. Maybe we need to do it better!
I thought this was going in a different way because of the synopsis. But it didn't. Maybe because of the author, maybe because of the characters, maybe because of the length of the book. Who knows. But it was good. It was a pleasant surprise. I was not let down in the least. The story stayed all in the present, not at all in the past. It felt like it was worn like a piece of clothing, where it had its own weight and feel and presence but was so just so universal for everyone that it wasn't even noticeable unless it brushed up against something.
The story does seem to be a little lost on whether it wants to focus more on the romance part of the story or make some big intrigue about Benny's TBI and alcoholism. Not that this is Highlander and "there can be only one." But it helps to have one be the priority in the story.
Overall, a good writing, with several instances of name switches between the main characters. But I have a fondness for our military boys, past and present. And I look forward to the sequel trying to learn from this story.
